Group Rating is a program offered through the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) which permits employers with better-than-average claim histories to join together through a sponsoring organization for the purpose of being rated as a larger group. By participating in group rating, employers enjoy much lower premium than could be attained on their own.
Over 90,000 employers in Ohio have joined a group rating plan and enjoy tremendous reductions in their workers’ compensation premiums.

Claims Management Services
Our claims teams provide professional, courteous, and prompt service to your staff. These teams investigate the claims to help the client determine its position on the claim. They also review BWC orders for correctness, examine all information received from medical providers and ensure that proper steps are being taken to return an injured employee to work.
Our examiners review all claims to determine if handicap reimbursement, second injury fund or other cost relief is due to the client resulting from a pre-existing condition or injury. Supporting medical documentation is obtained and the appropriate application filed.
The objective is always to cost effectively resolve all claims quickly and in the most professional manner possible.
Hearing Administration
Our Hearing Administration Department receives an electronic docket from the Industrial Commission and assigns hearing representatives based on geographic location on behalf of the employer. The hearing file is reviewed first by the docketing staff and then again by the assigned hearing representative for completeness prior to the hearing date. We have a corporate policy regarding the unauthorized practice of law and will perform no services for the employer that may be construed as the practice of law. Upon completion of the hearing, the hearing representative follows up with a written report to the client regarding the actions taken at the hearing and the disposition of the claim.
Client Education Services
We provide detailed training and continuing education for all clients through our quarterly client newsletters, special bulletins, and annual client seminars. In addition, we provide our clients with various procedure manuals which include information about claim processing procedures, interaction with us and the client's managed care organization, and sample forms for internal use.
Rate & Underwriting Services
We have an excellent Rate & Underwriting Department that is unparalleled in our industry. Consequently, we are most qualified to assist clients with forecasting, budgeting reserve projections, and determining the consequences of corporate changes.
In addition, our analysts complete an annual claim review of every member of our group rating plans. This not only ensures the accuracy of the estimates of savings, but also identifies individual employers who may be entering into an adverse loss situation.
We review assigned manual classifications and file any appropriate reclassification and related premium adjustment requests. In addition, we also provide feasibility studies to determine whether benefit continuation programs (wage continuation, medical only deductible program, etc.) would be beneficial to the client.
Claim Settlement
Settlement of workers’ compensation claims provides an excellent opportunity for employers to reduce future premiums and close claims. We have a separate settlement team whose sole responsibility is bringing about the settlement of open claims. Since 1999 we have settled more claims than any of our competitors.
